Back at the hotel I feigned a higher level of exhaustion than was the case and agreed to meet Grosvenor in the coffee shop at eight for breakfast. The vodkas had left me light-headed and over-confident, but not incapacitated. I got back into my room and had a few bottles of Evian and a cold, brisk shower holding my bandaged arm out of the water.

I intended to get closer to Wing Cam much earlier than Grosvenor envisaged. Time spent in reconnaissance was rarely wasted, as I’d been taught in the Intelligence Corps. I had decided that a recce of the facility where Wing was doing his deals was needed before we officially went anywhere near him offering the diamond for sale. Unfortunately, the alcohol in my bloodstream meant my brain had forgotten that discretion was also the better part of valour.

Petersen had told me roughly where the toy factory was and there couldn’t be many other similar facilities in the area. All I needed now was a car with a driver.

I snuck downstairs and strode through the lobby. I’d changed into dark clothes and sneakers, so I looked as if I was either on the way to a trendy new nightspot or a cat burglars’ convention.

Outside the hotel, a doorman asked if he could help. I’d have preferred to rent a motorbike, but it was too late for that and I didn't think I could ride one with my damaged arm. I asked about a hotel vehicle I could drive myself, but the man shook his head sadly and explained that there were none to be had without drivers. I admired his devotion to duty: while he was saying this I was fingering a large wad of US dollar bills. His sadness came mainly from weighing up the money that could be his, against knowing that he’d lose his job if he agreed.

It was the same driver we’d used before. Mistaking my intentions in going out again, he began enthusiastically suggesting a place called the Royal Hotel where they had many beautiful girls in the Karaoke lounge. His happy grin – all the drivers would be on commission of some sort from the mamasans – evaporated when he realised I wanted to drive out towards the airport. This puzzled him for a moment, then he shrugged.

In less than twenty minutes we were back near the airport. I told him to keep driving on down the road. I wanted to know if there were any factories nearby. He nodded, but a whiff of fear was visible in his face. I was on the right track. We must be near Dracula’s castle. As we passed the airport and motored down the dark road he slowed the limousine down.

“Why you want to come here, sir?” he asked, glancing over his shoulder as his foot became lighter on the accelerator.

“I want to see a big factory here. How many are there?”

“Not many, sir.”

“What’s that?” I said, pointing at a long white wall that seemed to stretch off into all directions of the night.
